About the Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT)

The role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. This involves strengthening Australia’s security, enhancing Australia’s prosperity, delivering an effective and high quality overseas aid program and helping Australian travellers and Australians overseas.

The department provides foreign, trade and development policy advice to the Australian Government. DFAT also works with other Australian government agencies to drive coordination of Australia’s pursuit of global, regional and bilateral interests.

About the position

We are seeking expressions of interest for the position of Honorary Consul Karachi for Australia.  The Honorary Consul can be an Australian citizen, but this is not a requirement.  The Honorary Consul must be resident in Karachi, Pakistan and will have consular jurisdiction over the Province of Sindh.

The position would be for a period of three years commencing from the receipt of an exequatur from the Government of Pakistan.  The role would demand approximately 4-6 hours a week of the successful applicant, and can therefore be performed alongside other duties or employment the applicant may have.

The successful candidate is required to have good standing in and a good reputation within Pakistan.  They should have strong organisational and communication skills, including the ability to liaise effectively with a wide range of people.  They should also have a strong knowledge of the political, bureaucratic, commercial, and media landscape of Pakistan.  

The primary functions of Australian honorary consuls include:  

  • providing consular assistance on behalf of the Australia High Commission in Islamabad;
  • maintaining contact with the resident Australian community
  • on instruction from the supervising mission, providing Travellers Emergency Loans to Australian citizens in need of temporary financial assistance;
  • conducting passport interviews with the public on behalf of the supervising mission.  If Passport Accreditation has been approved by the Australian Passport Office the honorary consul can also interview passport applicants, forward completed documentation to the supervising mission and, when necessary, return passports to applicants.

The secondary functions performed on behalf of the supervising mission include:   

  • maintaining good relations with the host government and local authorities, in particular branches relevant to Australia's consular interests;
  • general representation duties with local authorities and the host government, including acting as a communication channel for post when requested;
  • promoting Australian trade, economic, commercial, cultural, educational, scientific and technological interests;
  • assisting with post visits or high-level visits, for example securing appointment arrangements for visiting Australian officials;
  • assisting in building general public awareness of Australia in their country/jurisdiction through, for example, the dissemination of information on Australia;
  • engaging in ceremonial and public affairs activities as a representative of Australia, as requested/authorised by the supervising mission
  • directing enquirers wanting information on migrating or traveling to Australia or about importing or taking goods to Australia to the Australian Department of Home Affairs website.

Terms of Appointment

Terms of initial appointment are generally 3 years, with a probation period of 1 year. An honorarium is payable to appointees.

  • proof of citizenship;
  • proof of residency in Pakistan;
  • a current head shot photograph of yourself;
  • no more than one page on outlining your suitability for the role including a brief overview of your links with the political, bureaucratic, commercial and/or media community of Pakistan; 
  • confirmation that you do not have a consular commission from another country, nor hold any government or official position in your country of residence or citizenship;
  • confirmation you have appropriate time and office space to undertake the duties associated with the position;
  • confirmation of fluency in English and Urdu; 
  • confirmation you would be able to obtain a police clearance.
